Rush-Riverside Cancer Institute recognized for multidisciplinary approach to cancer care.

KANKAKEE, IL (March 8, 2017) - Riverside Medical Center and the Rush-Riverside Cancer Institute have been granted a three-year accreditation by the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a cancer care quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

In order to earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must:

  • Meet 34 CoC quality care standards
  • Be evaluated every three years through a survey process
  • Maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered care

As a CoC accredited cancer program, the Rush-Riverside Cancer Institute takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating each individual cancer as a complex group of diseases, requiring consultation among medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other board-certified experts specializing in cancer care. This multidisciplinary, team-driven approach results in improved patient care.

The Rush-Riverside Cancer Institute continues to grow and improve its quality of patient care through various cancer-related programs, available through the region, including prevention, early diagnosis, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, lifelong follow-up for recurrent disease and, when needed, end of life care. When patients receive care at a CoC facility, they also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatments, genetic counseling and other patient-focused services including psycho-social support, patient navigation and survivorship care, all important elements that seek to improve cancer survivors' quality of life.
